In 2011, when BAFTA Albert began, climate action and carbon emissions were not routinely discussed in pre-production, on set, on location or by the teams responsible for costume, procurement and catering.  I can say this, hand on heart, having been part of the production community around that time myself.

Fast forward 15 years and BAFTA Albert data paints a very different picture of UK TV and film production practices.  It shows a community of professionals dedicated to making a real difference behind the scenes, on screen and after the credits have rolled.  It shows a community pro-actively making sustainable production choices every day - from temporary power planning to cast and crew transport strategy, from set build decisions to set and costume recycling and reuse agreements.

There’s undeniably momentum and widespread commitment to climate action within the industry. In 2015, just 18 productions received Albert certification and ten years later, Albert certified 2,359 productions. That’s a huge increase in annual applications and people doing amazing work across the industry.

We all know, however, that there is so much more to be done and that significant climate action can only be achieved by working towards shared goals. That’s why our landmark report ACCELERATE sets out 12 direct actions for the screen community to build into their own sustainability strategies, and why we worked with the industry to produce SPARK: Clean Temporary Power by 2030. Both reports will be discussed at MPTS, as part of the Sustainability Series in the Production Theatre.

As a convenor and collaborator, BAFTA Albert must continue to evolve with the industry. We need to understand the changing opportunities, frustrations and ideas emerging from those working on the front line of production every day. This is why the opportunity to partner with MPTS is such an important one for us, as we reach our anniversary year. MPTS 2026 will be a key moment, to not only to share, but to listen, discuss and to generate ideas that could lead to further positive changes.  We can’t wait to see and hear from you all.
