Ofcom is introducing new accessibility requirements for the UK’s largest streaming platforms as part of the UK Media Act. These rules set clear minimum levels for subtitles, audio description and signing across major catalogues — bringing streamers closer to the accessibility expectations long applied in broadcasting.

This session will explain what the new Ofcom rules are and what they mean for both audiences and streamers. For platforms, the new framework means accessibility must be planned and delivered in a more structured and accountable way. For viewers with disabilities, the changes offer greater confidence that appropriate accessibility features will be in place, whether they choose traditional channels or a mainstream on‑demand service.

Alongside the regulatory and audience implications, the session will also explore how established broadcaster Channel 4, a long‑time leader in accessibility, can share practical insights of meeting and exceeding accessibility obligations. Their experience offers a valuable blueprint for streamers as they adapt to a more structured and accountable framework.

The panel will explore:

  • The regulatory change: an overview of the new accessibility requirements introduced by Ofcom under the UK Media Act.
  • Audience impact: how clearer expectations can support a smoother, more dependable experience for viewers who rely on accessibility features.
  • Industry impact: what streamers need to consider as they work toward meeting the new obligations.
  • Broadcaster expertise: how long‑established broadcasters like Channel 4 can share practical insights, lessons learned and proven approaches from years of delivering accessibility at scale, and what streamers can take from this experience.

This panel will be fully accessible, with an interpreter on stage.
