For decades filmmakers have looked down on small cameras, often regarding them as toys or sub-standard. But now, with major feature films being shot entirely on small mirrorless stills cameras or mobile phones attitudes are changing. Smaller cameras allow operators to be more mobile making it easier to get shots that may be impossible with traditional bulky cameras and the image quality gap between full size high end cinema cameras and small compact cameras has shrunk to the point where audiences can’t spot the difference. In this session filmmaker Alister Chapman will explore these changing attitudes - why would you buy a £75K cinema camera when a £5K mirrorless camera might be good enough? Can you really make a movie with a £5K camera? What happened to traditional camcorders and do they still have a place today?
